I Can't Figure Out Why So Many Americans Love Ronald Reagan

The article I have chosen is by David Martin and was published in 2014. Martin acknowledges the fact that many Americans believe that Ronald Reagan was a great president, however he can’t comprehend why this is. Martin’s piece notes the many ways Reagan’s presidency was a failure and why he should not be considered a good president. He also notes that many of the Americans that see Reagan in a positive light are from the right wing in terms of politics, “those on the right seem to be obsessed with memorialising him as one of America's greatest presidents".

Reagan was controversial to say the least when it came to the economy. Martin suggests that Reagan was supposed to improve the economy with his unique financial values but instead made the American economy unprecedentedly worse. He says that Reagan was ‘Beloved for his supposed reputation as a fiscal conservative, Reagan, in fact, managed to triple the national debt during his time in office and also managed to implement the biggest tax increase in history up to that time.’ This article portrays Reagan in a hypocritical way as Reagan was supposed to be a ‘fiscal conservative’ however after his time in office tax was a major issue.

Another issue that this article highlights is the Iran-Contra affair. This was the illegal sales of weaponry to Iran, at the time there were tensions between the two nations and Reagan oversaw the whole situation. Martin believes that further action should have been taken during the aftermath of this event, ‘It boggles the mind that he was not impeached for this outrageous endeavour and it seems that only his failing memory saved him from prosecution.’ This article is a clear example of hatred towards Reagan and his presidency and Martin includes solid evidence to support his opinion.
