The saw basically follows a PI in Hawaii righting wrongs, who is male in his what can be seen as his late 20s, and his single along with being a bit of a ladies man. Magnum lives a luxurious life on the estate and operates as a P.I on cases that suit him. The show was viewed by many as a just simply eye candy to watch Tom Selleck, young 20's something heartthrobs s at the time. But also the other main character of the show was his car, the 80's was obsessed with sports cars, e.g.. shows like Nightrider and Maini Vice. Really the red Ferrari 308 GTS was a character in its own right. The show as a whole was seen as a guilty pressure for many. It actually played into this male fantasy of life. Live in Hawaii, drives a red Ferrari, lots of attractive women, and as access to a helicopter! It just couldn't get better. Magnum as super cool, and always got the girl. It was very varied, from intense drama or broad comedy. He was a lot like the normal guy compared to James Bond or India Jones, and it was seen that the character show with the show.
Along with it always references to the Vietnam War, it highlighted that the characters had a past that linked heavy to many of the male audience watching, showed them as "real'' people that were damaged by the war and the after effects of the war. Skin Deep (Episode 1.6) throughout the episode Magnum and this two buddies Rick and T.C have flashbacks o the war, doesn't actually link to the mystery at the time, but once they've solved the case, they are all hanging out on the beach. Magnum asks T.C. if he still thinks about the war. T.C. laughs it off with a quick “No, never, how about you?” Magnum pats him on the shoulder and says “Who me? No. showing how it wasn't something that was talked about but pretty much everyone at the time could relate to.
